The Mahabharata contains philosophical and devotional material, such as a discussion of the four “goals of life” or purusharthas (“object of human pursuit”). Among the principal works and stories in the Mahabharata are the Bhagavad Gita, the story of Damayanti, an abbreviated version of the Ramayana, and the Rishyasringa, often considered as works in their own right. The Mahabharata is Set of 11 Volumes. Vol-1 Adi Parva, also known as the” Book of the Beginning”. Adi is a Sanskrit word that means first. Adi Parva has 19 sub-books and 236 adhyayas (chapters). Adi Parva describes how the epic came to be recited by Ugrasrava Sauti to the assembled rishis at the Naimisha Forest after first having been narrated at the sarpasatra of Janamejaya by Vaishampayana at Taxila. It includes an outline of contents from the eighteen books, along with the book’s significance. The history of the Bhāratas and the Bhrigus are described. The main part of the work covers the birth and early life of the princes of the Kuru Kingdom and the persecution of the Pandavas by Dhritarashtra.

The Mahabharata is Set of 11 Volumes. Vol-2 contains Sabha Parva, also known as the “Book of the Assembly Hall”, and Vana Parva, also known as the “Book of the Forest”. Sabha Parva, has 10 sub-books and 81 chapters. The book starts with the description of palace and assembly hall (sabha) built by Maya, at Indraprastha. The middle sub-books describe the life at the court, Yudhishthira’s Rajasuya Yajna that leads to expansion of the empire of Pandava brothers. The last two sub-books describe one vice and addiction of the virtuous king Yudhishthira – gambling. Vana Parva has 21 sub-books and 324 chapters. The First Part Vana Parva, contains 7 sub-books. It encludes Pandavas go into exile to the forest of Kamyaka to The battle between man-eating demon Kirmira and end with Sage Narada visits the Pandava brothers and he suggests tirthas to Pandava brothers – a visit to holy places in India.

The Mahabharata is Set of 11 Volumes. Vol-3 contains Last part of Vana Parva i.e. sub books from 8-21. It encludes tales of “Nahusha the snake and Yudhisthira” as well as “Ushinara and the hawk”, love stories of “Nala and Damayanti”, as well as “Savitri and Satyavan”. The second last Parva describes the story of Karna, how he was born to Kunti and deity Surya. In the last sub books Yaksha, interrogates Yudhisthira with 124 questions about nature of human life, necessary virtues for a happy life, ethics and morality.

The Mahabharata is Set of 11 Volumes. Vol-4 contains Virata Parva, also known as the “Book of Virata” and The Udyoga Parva, also known as the “Book of Effort”. Virata Parva, discusses the 13th year of exile which the Pandavas must spend incognito to avoid another 12 years of exile in the forest. They do so in the court of Virata. They assume a variety of concealed identities. Yudhisthira assumes the identity of game entertainer to the king and calls himself Kanka, Bhima of a cook Ballava, Arjuna teaches dance and music as enuch Brihannala and dresses as a woman, Nakula tends horses as Granthika, Sahadeva herds cows as Tantipala, and Draupadi maids as Sairandhri to queen Shudeshna. Udyoga Parva, describes the period immediately after the exile of Pandavas had ended. The Pandavas return, demand their half of the kingdom. The Kauravas refuse. The book includes the effort for peace that fails, followed by the effort to prepare for the great war – the Kurukshetra War.

The Mahabharata is Set of 11 Volumes. Vol-5 contains The Bhisma Parva, also known as the “Book of Bhisma”. Bhisma Parva, describes the first 10 days of the 18 day Kurukshetra War, and its consequences. It recites the story of Bhisma, the commander in chief of the Kaurava armies, who is fatally injured and can no longer lead as the commander. This book of Mahabharata includes the widely studied Bhagavad gita, sometimes referred to as Gita, or The Song of the Lord, or The Celestial Song. Bhagavadgita chapters describe Arjuna’s questioning the purpose of war, ultimate effects of violence and the meaning of life. Arjuna’s doubts and metaphysical questions are answered by Krishna. Other treatises in Bhisma parva include the Just war theory in ancient India, as well as strategies of war and troop deployment.

The Mahabharata is Set of 11 Volumes. Vol-6 contains The Drona Parva, also known as the “Book of Drona”. Drona Parva, describes the appointment of Drona as commander-in-chief of the Kaurava alliance, on the 11th day of the Kurukshetra War, the next four days of battles, and his death on the 15th day of the 18 day war. The parva recites how the war became more brutal with each passing day, how agreed rules of a just war began to be ignored by both sides as loved ones on each side were slain, how the war extended into the night, and how millions of more soldiers and major characters of the story – Abhimanyu, Jayadratha, Satyajit, Ghatotkacha – died during the war.

The Mahabharata is Set of 11 Volumes.Vol-7 Contains The Karna Parva, also known as the “Book of Karna”, The Shalya Parva, also known as the “Book of Shalya”, The Sauptika Parva, also known as the “Book of the Sleeping” and The Stri Parva, or the “Book of the Women”. Karna Parva has 96 chapters. Karna Parva describes the appointment of Karna as the third commander-in-chief of the Kaurava alliance. The parva recites how war begins to tire and frustrate everyone, triggers angry shouting matches between Yudhisthira and Arjuna – brothers who otherwise love each other. This book describes how brutal war leads to horrifying behavior over the 16th and 17th day of the 18 day Kurukshetra War. At the end of the parva, Karna is killed in a fierce battle with Arjuna. Shalya Parva has 4 sub-books and 64 chapters. Shalya Parva describes the appointment of Shalya as the fourth commander-in-chief of the Kaurava alliance, on the 18th day of the Kurukshetra War. The book mentions the anger and hatred among survivors on the Kauravas side, particularly Duryodhana, Aswatthama, Kritavarman and Kripa. Sauptika Parva has 2 sub-books and 18 chapters. Sauptika Parva describes the revenge of Aswatthama, Kritavarman and Kripa – the three out of four Kaurava survivors – in the night after the 18th day of the Kurukshetra War. Aswatthama takes revenge for his father’s death during the war by going to Pandava’s camp and unleashing weapons that kills all those who sleep. The only survivors are those who were not in the camp – the five Pandava brothers, Satyaki and Krishna. Stri Parva, has 4 sub-books and 27 chapters. Sometimes spelled Stree Parva, it describes the grief of women because of the war.

The Mahabharata is Set of 11 Volumes. Vol-8 contains The Shanti Parvaor also known as the “Book of Peace”. Shanti parva, has 3 sub-parvas. Rajadharma anusasana Parva, Apaddharma anusasana Parva and Moksha dharma Parva. This book contains First two sub Parva. The book is set after the war is over, the two sides have accepted peace, and Yudhisthira starts his rule of the Pandava kingdom. Shanti parva recites duties of the ruler, dharma and good governance as counseled by dying Bhishma as well as various Rishis. The parva includes many symbolic tales such as one about “starving and vegetarian Vishvamitra stealing meat during a famine” and fables such as “the fowler and pigeons”. The book also includes a theory of caste and a comparative discussion between a rule of truth versus a rule of rituals, declaring truth to be far superior over rituals. Shanti parva has been widely studied for its treatises on jurisprudence, prosperity and success.

The Mahabharata is Set of 11 Volumes. Vol-9 contains Moksha dharma Parva the third and the last Prava of The Shanti Parvaor also known as the “Book of Peace”. This sub-book describes behavior and rules to achieve moksha (emancipation, release, freedom). There is no fixed time for the acquisition of righteousness. Death waits for no man. When man is constantly running towards the jaws of Death, the accomplishment of righteous acts is proper at all times. Like a blind man who, with attention, is capable of moving about his own house, the man of wisdom, with mind set on Yoga, succeeds in finding the track he should follow. One who walketh along the track recommended by the understanding, earns happiness both here and hereafter. A person should never do that to others, which he does not like to be done to him by others.

Anushasana Parva, continues the theme of Shanti Parva, a discussion of duties of a ruler, the rule of law, instructions on dharma for those close to the leader. The dialogue is between Yudhisthira, Bhisma and other sages. The book debates the duties, behaviors and habits of individuals, with chapters dedicated to men and to women. Various types of marriages are mentioned and their merits compared. The parva also recites many symbolic tales and legends such as the legend of Nachiketa, as well as the death and last rites of Bhishma, the eldest member of the Kuru family.

Ashramvasik Parva has 3 sub-books and 92 chapters. Ashramvasik Parva describes 15 years of prosperous rule by Yudhisthira after the great war. Mausala Parva has 9 chapters. Mausala Parva describes the death of Krishna in the 36th year after the Kurukshetra war had ended, the submersion of Dwaraka under sea. Mahaprasthanika Parva has 3 chapters. Mahaprasthanika Parva recites the journey of the Pandavas across India and finally their ascent towards Himalayas, as they climb their way to heaven on Mount Meru. Svargarohana Parva has 5 chapters. Svargarohana Parva describes the arrival of Yudhisthira in heaven, his visit to hell and what he finds in both places. The gods then reveal the fake hell and the real heaven to Yudhisthira.
